The Chinese Civil War, 1946-49
Background:
After World War 2, the Second United Front between the Nationalists and the Communists ended. Civil War broke out in 1946.
Developments:
The US sent General Marshall to mediate the two sides but it failed.
Fighting resumed, with the Nationalist armies led by Chiang Kai-shek growing weaker.
Nanjing were captured by the People's Liberation Army of the Communists. In April 1949, the Nationalists fled to Taiwan.
Significance:
It marked the birth of the first communist government in Asia, the establishment of the People's Republic of China on October 1,1949.
Asia became another major battlefield of the Cold War.
